Speaking to High School Athletic Directors or High School Coaches: Always stop in the school. Emaliing ahead of time is okay, but you cannot make email your only attempt of contact. Many ADs and coaches are busy and rarely return emails. When visiting a high school, you can ask the secretary if the AD is available. If so you explain that you are a recruiter and would like to speak to them about a few of the school’s student-athletes. As a former football coach, whenever a college coach or recruiter came in, I was immediately notified and met with them right away. When you meet with them, start off by saying who you are and who we are as a company.
Explain that we are an approved NCAA scouting service and work with college programs to supply a list of potential prospects. We would love to talk to you about any sophomores and juniors who have college level ability. Write down the names. You can find these athletes on social media and more. Information is key. If available, ask if you can speak with the players in a group. Tell them you are a scouting service that supplies names to college programs. We want their information in our database and featured on our site. We will do a social media feature for them to build their exposure. Pass out your cards and make sure they know the website. Have them enter your referral code when completing the form. This will allow me to know who to direct the student athlete to for further contact & follow up. Kids love attention. They are on social media 24/7. The words “feature you” and “build your exposure” are huge to them and will make them want to get their information in the system asap. If unable to meet with the student athletes, ask the coaches if they can distribute the cards to the student-athletes when they see them later in the day. The athlete spotlight is free and only take a few minutes for them to sign up.
Speaking to Trainers, Travel Team Coaches, AAU Coaches & 7v7 Coaches: Stop by a practice or game. Coaches, parents and players get excited that a recruiter has heard about their program and has taken the time to get to know them. Have a notebook out and take notes. It intrigues the player and parents who are at the game or practice. They want to know who you are there to see and how can they have their child evaluated. Simply give the parent a card and explain who you are and a little about the program.
Do not be a salesman. You are simply there to evaluate talent and supply names to college programs. Explain to the parent that you would love to have their child’s information in our database and featured on our site. We will do a social media feature for them to build their exposure. Make sure they know the website. Have them enter your referral code when completing the form. This will allow me to know who to direct the student athlete to for further contact & follow up. If talking to the coach, commend them on the organization and the flow of practice. Tell them they have a lot of talent on the team and you would love to have each player’s information on our website. Pass out your cards and ask them to distribute them to each athlete at the practice, game or team meeting.
